Maya had always felt invisible at Walmart—just another employee stocking shelves. But for her, it was more than a job. It was a chance to make a small difference.

One rainy afternoon, a tired mother and her son came to Maya in search of supplies for a school project. When the woman hesitated at the checkout, unsure if she could afford them, Maya couldn’t stand to see the worry on her face.

She quietly gathered the items, used her employee discount, and handed the bag to the mother. "It’s already taken care of," Maya said with a soft smile. The woman, shocked, tried to pay but Maya insisted, “It’s okay. We help each other.”

The next day, her manager called her into the office. Maya braced herself for a reprimand, but instead, he handed her a letter. "We’ve received complaints. You can’t give away store property like that," he said coldly.

Maya’s heart sank as she was escorted out. Her kindness, her attempt to help, had cost her job.

Now, walking out of the store for the last time, the weight of her decision hit her. She had no backup plan, no savings to fall back on. How would she pay her bills? she wondered, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in her chest.

But as she reached the bus stop, she saw the mother and child again, standing at the entrance. The little boy waved and smiled. “Thank you!
